When the sediment deposits of the port are fully utilized, these are closed down according to demands from the Danish Nature Agency. Hereafter these can be used as port areas.
In connection with the closing down, the sand masses become very aquous and it takes a long time, before it is possible for instance to establish buildings on the area.
In order to speed up the process in a green way, Port of Frederikshavn has in cooperation with Ny Vraa started an experiment with planting of Energy Willow on one of the areas.
Energy Willow absorbs much water in the growth period and thereby contributes to a faster drying of the area. Another profit in the duration of the process is that Energy Willow stores nearly 14 tons CO²/ha per growth year and increases the biodiversity in the area.
